Tell us a bit about yourself. Where you come from, where you’re going.
My name is Mala Reignz, I am a Rapper, Song Writer, Designer/Owner of the Bad Girl Chainz accessory line and Co-Owner of ScholarVMG, an indie music label based out of NYC. I was born and raised in The Bronx in a neighborhood called Kingsbridge. My mom raised my big sister, little brother and myself in a one bedroom apartment by herself. Coming from such meager beginnings only inspired me to work extremely hard to become successful in life.
What have been some of the biggest influences for you and your music? Where does your inspiration come from?
My parents were a big influence musically, my dad was a timbalero. He played the Congas, Timbales, and Piano. He would throw jam sessions in the basement of his building and invite all of his friends over to play for hours and hours. He would give me the cow bell and let me play along, keeping the pace for the musicians. My mom was a disco queen who loved all different kinds of music from Salsa to Freestyle to Disco to Oldies. She was my first introduction to Rap Music. I remember being very young hearing “White Lines” by the Sugar Hill Gang play in the house and singing along. I had no idea that I would grow up to become a rapper myself. What inspired me the most to get into music was my circumstances. I left a broken home at 16 and began living as an adult paying rent and school tuition. Not long after that I had my son, Alex. I soon became a single teen mom struggling to make it through college. Those kind of circumstances can really make you feel overwhelmed. I needed an outlet for all the emotions I was experiencing. First it was spoken word, then it morphed into rap music.
My sound is authentic, lyrical, emotional and energetic.
In my opinion the music industry is at a cross roads with the new technology that is making music ever more accessible worldwide BUT at the same time contradicts the traditional ways of selling records and making a profit. Because of the decline in sales, record labels have fallen back from developing their artists, also signing artists into a 360 deal where they get a much bigger cut – and from more than just records – over a much longer period of time. What I have experienced from Conquer so far is a real interest in their artists by helping to develop marketing campaigns that cross promote their artists with larger brands and bringing the sales directly to their bank account -definitely necessary for independent artists who fund their own operations.
It is really hard to get a deal with a major label so just begin with that knowledge in mind. Get yourself ready to run your own business because your brand is your business. Do your research! Be smart with how you spend your money and remember that it costs money to promote your music/videos. Make GREAT music and don’t copy other artists’ styles. Be creative as possible, not only will you stand out but you will also save money.
But of course, my latest single “Soul Slap” featuring DJ Webstar is out now on Conquer.com and in all the digital stores go get that!
