I was interviewed by one of our artists, Elijah Jamal, on his blog radio show: Music With Elijah Jamal. Elijah asked me two questions about what I look for when selecting an event venue and artists for a showcase, and I wanted to share them with you.
Elijah: What are some of the concerns that you think about when deciding on venues to promote your entertainers?
Elsi: I always want to make sure that the venue is reputable. I checkout the venue’s history, past shows, any public legal disputes, and anything that can tarnish the client’s name.
I also like to look at venues that either have an available set up for live performances or that the space can be flexible with the artist’s own setup. And, I look for venues open to cross promotion. After all, as the saying goes, it’s all about who you know.
I get to know the venues and ask them to help out by spreading the word about the event going on, as long as it’s a public event.
Elijay: What are some of the qualities that you look for in selecting entertainers to showcase?
Elsi: I typically gravitate to people who are commonly referred to as ‘grinders’ and ‘hustlers’ – individuals who are not afraid of hard work! We are lucky to have a great group of independent artists that take the time to reach out, call, email and work collaboratively with me.
The music industry is tough and flexibility is key. I cannot stress how many times I’ve overheard backstage that an artist/band was either easy going or terrible to work with. That carries a huge impact and word gets around FAST!
I love working with talented, hard working and humble artists who know how to roll with the punches. They put in as much work as I do in making each and every event a huge success.
