This past week we had the opportunity to talk to the lovely Pop/Rock star, Jenni Spiro, about her song “Hey You”; as it was selected to accompany the closing scene of Jersey based film “Over the Line”. Jenni has risen to popularity in the New Jersey, performing all along the East Coast with other popular bands, as well as solo acoustic acts. Now with her strong roots to the Jersey area, and her powerful writing style, Jenni is taking it to a whole new level with her song “Hey You”
Tell us a little bit about yourself
So I grew up in Lake Hopatcong, New Jersey. North Jersey, small, little town. And basically, both of my parents are musicians, and still are. So they basically just … It’s in the blood. You know, so they would sing and make like play instruments, and make me sing, and over, and over, and over.
How would you describe your sound to potential fans?
I would say like pop rock. I love rock. I would say more rock than pop.
Who are some of your greatest influences in music?
You know, my parents. . . Alanis Morissette was like my favorite influence growing up. Jagged Little Pill, and then Jimmy Eat World. I love them, their harmonies, oh, they’re writing, everything. Those are two really big ones, I think.
Your song “Hey You” was recently selected to accompany the closing scene of an award winning jersey based film “Over the Line”. Could you tell us more about the project?
Yeah, actually my mom knows … She’s been friends with this guy for like her whole life. And he shot the movie and said, “Do you have any songs?” Because he knows she’s a writer. We’re all writers. So, “Do you have any songs that you want to submit?” So she submitted her songs and he’s like, “No.” Then she told me about it, and I was like, “Here, give him this one.” And he picked it, which was pretty cool.
Could you tell us more about the song and your personal meaning behind it?
When I wrote it, I was actually bartending. And just … It’s like people like taking from you. You know, like basically, “Hey you, give me back my point of view.” Like just trying … I don’t know, man. People trying to take from you, you know, and not give anything back.
Have you seen the film? If so what did you think?
I’ve only seen bits and pieces because they’re still like editing and everything, but it’s cool. It’s a really different film, and it’s a short film. But it’s like … They’ve won awards for it and everything already, which is pretty rad.
Why do you think your song fits so well with the thematic elements of the film?
It’s a dark comedy, and like she’s facing her own demons, and realizes at the end, her fate is in her own hands. And I think, Hey You is basically that, which is kind of funny.
When does the film release?
They’re still working on the music and doing all that, so as soon as I find that out, I’ll let you know, but … I mean, hopefully soon, so we can all see it.
Where can we find “Hey You” and some of your other music online?
So right now, it’s on Reverb Nation. I’m actually going to put it on iTunes soon. Probably this week, so you can buy it. And on Conquer, yeah. Conquer’s website, so that’s it for right now, where you can find it.
Any future projects we should be excited about?
Well, I am in the process of writing right now, hopefully some shows coming up, and just trying to put out more songs really. That’s it. That’s all you can do.
Any parting advice for fans trying to make in music?
It’s funny you say that, because like I don’t think I’ve made it in music. So, I mean, basically just, as long as you always keep going, never give up. Always pursue your passion and some things will come up and some things won’t and it’s all positive. Yeah, I say, “Don’t ever give up.”
